How We Created Senior Pictures That Felt Completely Unique to Josie | Minneapolis Senior Photographer

Summer Senior Photos in Minneapolis with Personality, Variety, and that are a 100% Josie

Every once in a while, a senior shows up for their session and I know almost immediately that it’s going to be a good one.

Josie was one of those seniors.

We’ve had the honor of photographing Josie’s wonderful family numerous times over the years, so I already knew she was fun, confident, and completely comfortable being herself.

I’m not going to lie, that kind of confidence already makes my job easier. But the thing that really takes a senior session from good to great? The planning that happens long before session day ever arrives.

Great Senior Pictures Aren’t Luck, They’re Planned.

One of the biggest misconceptions about senior pictures is that the magic happens when the camera comes out.

It doesn’t.

The best senior sessions start with a plan.

Before Josie’s Minneapolis senior session, we sat down for her session consultation in the spring of her junior year. We talked through everything from the overall feel of her photos to locations, outfits, her love for volleyball, and how to create a session that felt like her from beginning to end.

That conversation matters more than people realize.

It’s where we get to know each senior, talk through ideas, make recommendations, and start building a session that actually makes sense for them. Not a copy-paste plan. Not whatever everyone else is doing. Something that feels personal.

One of the recommendations we often make during that process is a styling appointment with our friends at Sorted Boutiques. It’s not required, but it is something we highly suggest because their team does an incredible job offering personal styling with one-on-one attention and help finding photo-worthy outfits that match each senior’s personality and vision for their session. With locations in Maple Grove, St. Cloud, Stillwater, and the Brainerd/Baxter area, Sorted is also conveniently located near so many of the Minnesota seniors and families we photograph — which makes the whole experience even easier.

Josie took that advice, and honestly, it made such a difference.

By the time session day arrived, we weren’t guessing. We had a plan. Her outfits felt intentional, the locations made sense, and everything worked together without feeling overdone.

And that confidence showed up in every single image.

Variety Without Looking Like a Different Person

One thing I hear from seniors all the time is that they want variety.

They want casual photos. They want dressier photos. They want something fun. Sometimes they want to include sports, activities, or hobbies that are important to them.

The challenge is creating all of that without making the session feel disconnected.

Together with Josie, we made that happen!

From casual outfits to dressier looks, from volleyball photos to some of the dreamiest images of the entire evening, every part of the session felt cohesive because every part of it still felt like her.

Nothing felt forced.

Nothing felt like she was trying to fit into someone else’s Pinterest board.

The photos simply reflected who she already is.

Why Josie’s Senior Session Worked

If I’m being honest, the locations weren’t what made this session successful.

The outfits weren’t either.

And although Minneapolis gave us some pretty incredible light that evening, that wasn’t it either.

The reason this session worked is because Josie trusted the process.

She showed up prepared. She embraced every idea. She wasn’t afraid to laugh. She wasn’t worried about looking silly.

She simply showed up as herself.

That’s when the best senior pictures happen.

Not when everything is perfect.

Not when every pose is planned.

But when seniors stop worrying about how they’re supposed to look and start having fun.

Senior Pictures That Actually Feel Like You

One of the things we say often around here is that we have absolutely no interest in creating senior pictures that look like everyone else’s.

Josie’s session is a perfect example of why.

The photos don’t feel trendy.

They don’t feel staged.

They don’t feel like they belong to somebody else.

They feel like Josie.

And years from now, that’s what matters most.

Not what was popular on Instagram.

Not what everybody else was doing.

Just photos that remind you exactly who you were during one of the most exciting seasons of your life.

Josie, thank you for trusting us with such an important milestone. This session was an absolute blast, and I have a feeling these images are going to be favorites for a very long time.

They already are around here.

We met at Ridgewater College back in 2008 while we were both pursuing professional photo degrees.
