Sam’s Urban Senior Pictures in Minneapolis with Hockey Photos, Urban Rooftops & A whole lot of Personality
One of the biggest compliments we get from senior guys (and their moms) is how much fun they end up having during their session. Let’s be honest… most senior guys aren’t exactly counting down the days until senior pictures, but I’m proud to say we have a 100% success rate of our senior guys leaving saying, “That was actually fun!”
One of the biggest things we focus on during our senior sessions (senior guy sessions, especially) is making the experience fun and relaxed — not stiff, awkward, or overly posed. And Sam’s senior session was the perfect example of that.
Sam is a senior at Becker High School, and we headed into the North Loop area of Minneapolis for his senior pictures. Between the historic brick, edgy alleyways, modern architecture, and rooftop views, the city gave us SO much variety for his photos without ever needing to travel far.
One of the things I loved most about Sam’s session was how much personality we packed into it. We created everything from clean, classic senior portraits to dramatic black and white images, hockey photos on top of a parking ramp, and honestly… some of the funniest final images of the night.
A week before his session during our final details call, Sam casually mentioned he had a “surprise outfit.” What he failed to mention was that it was also going to be a surprise to his mom. 😂
At the very end of the night, he pulled out cut off jean shorts, cowboy boots, and a sleeveless flannel for photos with his truck and completely committed to the bit. And honestly? Those ended up being some of my favorite photos from the entire session because they felt so unapologetically him.
That’s always the goal with our senior pictures. Sure, we want photos that look great, but more importantly, we want them to actually feel like your senior. Their personality, hobbies, style, interests, and even their weird little ideas are what make the photos memorable.
And yes… we’ll absolutely have a lot of fun along the way too.
For moms especially, I know there’s often this fear that senior pictures are going to feel forced or painful for their son, but sessions like this are exactly why I love photographing senior guys. Once they realize this isn’t about awkward fake smiles for two hours, they end up having a really good time.
